Sue and I started taking small groups of 10 on Gourmet Tours to some of the most beautiful parts of Italy in 2008. We started in Tuscany in the beautiful Villa Corsano, exploring the surrounding towns and picturesque countryside. The following year we went north, staying near Lake Garda, touring the wine region of Franciacorta in Lombardy and then we spent two consecutive trips at a beautiful villa near Catania in Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. In 2015 we were in Puglia, staying at a luxury masseria just outside the white city of Ostuni and last year we toured Lazio, combining wine, food and the wonderful gardens outside of Rome.

In 2017 we are heading north for something special. We are going to Piemonte and we’ll stay in the very heart of the Langhe area famous for the vineyards that produce the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. A visit or two to wineries is a must and we’ll get private tours and tastings as with all our tours. We’ll go to markets nearby and then return to our villa to prepare lunch or dinner and I’ll guide you through making some of the iconic dishes of the region. This is the time for fresh porcini and, if we can, we’ll go out collecting and then prepare them with risotto made with some of the best rice in the world, Aquerello, grown nearby in Vercelli.

We’ll also dine out. Piemonte has exceptional restaurants. We’ll go to one of my favourites, Scannabue in Torino, where I’ve had some sublime dishes. One evening we’ll go for a pizza degustation in the small village of San Mauro Torinesi, where my friend Patrick Ricci, regarded as one of the top pizza makers in Italy, experiments with various ancient grains to make extraordinary pizze topped with unique ingredients.

A short drive from our villa is the small town of Bra, where the Slow Food movement began. We’ll visit and walk through its picturesque streets and lanes before having lunch at Boccondivino, in the same building where Slow Food has its headquarters.Piemonte is bordered on the north by the Alps and cheese making here is a passion. We’ll taste the best that can be found like Castemagno, Gorgonzola, goat’s cheeses, Bra Duro, the various and famous Toma and many more, all matched with the local wines - sparkling, white, rosè, red, sweet, grappa and the vermouths.

The vermouths here are phenomenal and why wouldn’t they be? Turin is where vermouth was invented!

The capital of Piemonte, Torino (Turin), is one of Italy’s wealthiest cities. It is also a cultural, artistic, political and business hub. It was Italy’s first capital and contains the residence of the House of Savoy. The city is well known for its renaissance, baroque, rococo, neo-classical, and art nouveau architecture.

For those who love antiquity, Turin is the home of the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum) housing one of the largest collections of Egyptian antiquities in the world with more than 30,000 artifacts. The museum dates from 1824 but the first piece in what is known as the “Turin Collection” arrived in 1630. One morning will be devoted to a walking tour of this beautiful city guided by Turin native and my good friend Sandra Salerno. She knows each shop, each caffè, each little laneway and monument as only someone who loves their city can. Of course there will be plenty of time to wander and shop.
